The Fionian Chamber Choir (Det Fynske Kammerkor) is based in Odense (known as the hometown of the famous writer Hans Christian Andersen) on the island of Funen, located in the center of Denmark.
Formed in 1988, the repertoire of The Fionian Chamber Choir (FCC) contains compositions by Nielsen, Schultz, la Cour, Holmboe and Britten. Among many achievements, they have recorded a double-CD together with the English organist Kevin Bowyer: J.S. Bach's Das Orgelbüchlein (for Nimbus Records). As a celebration of its 10th anniversary, the choir later recorded a CD, which takes the listener on a journey through more than four centuries of Danish Christmas music. Yet another CD is DANISH SUMMER, which includes Danish choral songs about spring and summer. The latest release THERE IS A TREASURE presents titbits from the Danish choral church music of the 20. century.
With regular intervals, the choir is participating in performances of major choral works, in collaboration with Odense Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonic Chorus in Odense. Examples are Messiah by Handel, the St. John Passion by Bach and Requiems by Verdi, Brahms and Mozart. Stefan Parkman, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Nicholas Cleobury, Aldo Ceccato and others have conducted these performances.
The choir has often travelled to other European countries, for example in October 2006, where the choir travelled to Rome, Italy. During this trip, the choir performed in The American Church and in The Church of Santa Margherita in Olevano, outside Rome . Also, the choir sang during Tuesday's Mass in The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Later the same day, the choir performed at the Piazza Navona (open air concert). In October 2009 the choir travelled to Berlin, and 2 years later another trip brought the choir to the Czech Republic.
The choir is rehearsing every tuesday evening in a building next to Vor Frue Kirke (The Church of Our Lady). It is the oldest secular building in Odense, built c. 1300. It is now a place where the congregation meets, although formerly it functioned as a grammar school and a mortuary. The church is the oldest church in the city, dating from the end of the 13th century. A wooden church stood on this site as early as 11th century, being replaced by a church in granite.
Alice Granum was educated at the The Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Odense, where she is now associate professor. She is a highly respected lecturer at workshops countrywide and abroad. Her early success in forming The Fionian Chamber Choir led in 1991 to an invitation to found the Philharmonic Chorus of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. As yet another token of recognition, Alice was subsequently appointed conductor of Dania Sonans, who were ambassadors of Danish choral music to the world.
